If you've lost a key fob, bought a used car without all the fobs, or your existing fob just stopped pairing with the car, you have two real options. Go to the dealership: leave the car for a day or two, pay $200–500 for the fob plus programming plus the tow if your car isn't drivable. The car-key landscape has gotten more complex since the mid-1990s, and which type you have affects the time and cost. In rough order from oldest to newest:
- Transponder keys (mid-1990s onward). A plain-looking metal key with a small chip embedded in the plastic head. The chip pairs with the car's immobilizer — if the chip isn't recognized, the engine won't start even if the metal blade turns. Most Hondas, Toyotas, Fords, Chevys, Nissans, Hyundais, and Kias from the mid-90s through the late-2000s. Time to program: 10–30 minutes. - Remote head-keys (mid-2000s onward). Same idea as transponder keys but with lock/unlock buttons integrated into the head — a single piece. Same programming complexity as transponder. Time: 15–30 minutes. - Smart-key remote fobs (mid-2010s onward). The push-to-start fob style. No blade you turn in an ignition (though most have an emergency blade hidden inside the fob shell). Cryptographically paired to the car. Time: 30–60 minutes per fob. - All-keys-lost smart-key replacement (every modern make). The procedure when you have no working fob — we have to generate a new fob from the car's lock cylinder or immobilizer module. Time: 1–2 hours; specific to the car. See all-keys-lost service.
1. You call (941) 297-5289 with the year, make, model, and what's happening — fob is lost, fob is broken, fob just stopped working, or you want to add a backup fob to a car that still has one working key. 2. We quote the price before dispatching. Cost varies more than people expect — a transponder key for a 2010 Toyota Corolla is a fraction of the cost of a smart-key fob for a 2023 BMW. 3. We come to your Sarasota location — driveway, office parking lot, beach lot, wherever the car is. We need to be at the car (or, in some edge cases, have the car driven to us, but most jobs are at-vehicle). 4. We cut the blank (if there's a metal blade). Smart-key fobs without a blade skip this step. 5. We program the chip or fob to your car's immobilizer using our programmer. This is the part that takes the most time — and it's the part dealerships charge the most for. 6. You drive away. No tow, no dealership trip, no week-long wait.
- East Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch corridor. Newer construction = newer cars = more smart-key fobs that need programming. Most of our fob volume comes from this corridor. - Downtown and the islands. Mix of newer and older vehicles. Smart-key fob loss at beach access lots is a routine pattern. - Gulf Gate and Bee Ridge. Established residential — heavy mix of transponder-era vehicles. Often it's a duplicate fob for a spouse or teen driver. - Used-car lots along US-41. Customers buy a used car that came with one fob, want a backup made immediately. We handle this regularly. - Snowbird-season turnover. Returning seasonal residents arrive in Sarasota and realize the fob has been in a drawer in Ohio since April. We rebuild from the car.

- Fob type. Transponder < remote head-key < smart-key fob, in roughly that cost order. - Make and model. Some manufacturers (Ford, GM, Toyota) have programming systems we can handle cheaply. Some (BMW, Mercedes, some Land Rover, some Jaguar) have proprietary security that requires specific equipment — we'll tell you upfront if your car is in this category and refer you to the right place if needed. - Lost vs duplicate. If you still have one working fob, adding a spare is the easiest case — cheaper and faster. - All-keys-lost. Different procedure, longer time, separate quote — see our all-keys-lost page. - Time of day. Standard 7 AM–10 PM standard rate; after-hours emergency rate after that.
Three pieces of information let us quote accurately and bring the right blank:
1. Year, make, model. Critical. A 2018 Honda CR-V has a different fob than a 2014 Honda CR-V. 2. Original keyway / fob type. "Push-to-start" vs "I turn a key in the ignition" — that's enough for us to know whether to bring a smart-key blank or a transponder blank. 3. Do you still have one working fob? Adding a spare is one workflow; all-keys-lost is another.
If you don't know the year or model exactly, take a picture of your registration or VIN sticker (driver's side door jamb) and we can read it.
Dealership flow: tow your car (if it's not drivable without a key) → drop at the dealer → wait for a service appointment slot → dealer orders the blank → dealer schedules the programmer → you pick up the car.
